Winamp’in tanımı, herhalde “zamana damgasını vuran muzik kutusu” olurdu. Winamp, NullSoft tarafından 1999 yılında AOL (American Online) şirketinden açık arttırma ile satın alındı ve geliştiricileri tarafından yeni özellikler eklenerek bugüne kadar getirildi. Winamp’te halen AOL izleri göze çarpıyor. Örneğin son sürümler, AOL Music Now (AOL’un çevrimiçi müzik mağazası), In2TV (AOL’un tekrar açılan çevrimiçi TV kanalı) ve AOL Radio gibi özellikler üzerine kurulu bulunmaktadır.

Winamp, arayüzü eklenebilir ve çıkarılabilir paneller içeriyor. Bunlardan başlıcaları kontrol tuşları, ortam kitaplığı, çalma listesi editörü ve video oynatma penceresidir. Bu çoklu paneller, Windows Media Player ve iTunes kullanıcılarını, Winamp’e çekmeyi hedefliyor.

Winamp, bedava olmasına rağmen birçok özelliği barındırıyor. Ana kontroler üsttedir ve o anda çalınan şarkıyı gösterir. Program 10 band ekolayzır ve bu ekolayzırı özelleştirmek için araçlar içermektedir. Ortam kitaplığı, ekolayzırın hemen altında bulunur ve çevrimiçi ses, video dosyaları, çalma listeleri gibi lokal içeriğe ulaşmanızı sağlar. Ortam kitaplığının altında sanatçının internetten alınan biyografisi ve album hakınnda bilgi de gösterilmektedir. Ortam kitaplığı paneli, ücretsiz ve inanılmaz çeşitlilikte medyaya erişim sağlar. Ayrıca canlı radyo dinlemenize de olanak sağlar. Winamp’e eklenen AOL Music Now çevrimiçi mağazısında 2 milyondan fazla şarkının kataloğu da bulunmaktadır. Music Now mağazasına, Winamp tarayıcısından erişiliyor ve şarkı Winamp’te çalınıyor. Winamp, başka bir müzik mağasına erişimi malesef desteklemiyor. Programın ücretsiz Internet TV özelliği sayesinde, müzik videolarını ve canlı konserleri izleyebilirsiniz. Diğer göze çarpan özellik ise görsel öğe kolekisyonu. Görsel öğeler, müziğinizi bir devinimle izlemenizi sağlar.

Winamp şimdi taşınabilir müzik oynatıcılarını destekliyor. Doğal olarak CD yazabilen sürücüleride destekliyor. Fakat bu versiyonda, ACC biçimini 2X hızında yazma, diğer formatlarda ise en fazla 6X hızında yazma destekleniyor.
